Combined effect of short stature and socioeconomic status on body mass index and weight gain during reproductive age in Brazilian women BJMBR
Sichieri,R.; Silva,C.V.C.; Moura,A.S..
Short stature, a marker for undernutrition early in life, has been associated with obesity in Brazilian women, but not in men. We tested the hypothesis that weight gain during the reproductive years could explain this gender difference. A national two-stage household survey of mothers with one or more children under five years of age was conducted in Brazil in 1996. The subjects were women aged 20 to 45 years (N = 2297), with last delivery seven months or more prior to the interview. The regions of the country were divided into rural, North/Northeast (urban underdeveloped) and South/Southeast/Midwest (urban developed). The dependent variables were current body mass index (BMI) measured, BMI prior to childbearing (reported), and BMI change. Socioeconomic...

Factors influencing colostrum yield by sows Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Machado,A.P.; Otto,M.A.; Bernardi,M.L.; Wentz,I.; Bortolozzo,F.P..
ABSTRACT An adequate colostrum intake, in order to ensure the survival and weight gain of piglets, depends on the sow's ability to produce enough colostrum for the whole litter. The aim of this study was to evaluate factors involved in colostrum yield (CY) variability related to the sow, the litter and the farrowing process. The experiment was conducted with 96 Camborough 25(r) sows of parities one to seven, whose farrowing was spontaneous. Colostrum production of each sow was estimated by summing up the colostrum intake of each piglet in the litter, estimated by an equation that takes into account the birth weight and weight gain during the first 24h of life. The multiple regression model explained 28% of variation in CY, with 24% and 4% respectively of...

Influence of parity on concentrations of enzymes, proteins, and minerals in the milk of cows Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Rocha,T.G.; Franciosi,C.; Nociti,R.P.; Silva,P.C.; Sampaio,A.A.M.; Fagliari,J.J..

Performance of lactating goats fed diets containing inactive dry yeast R. Bras. Zootec.
Gomes,Ludmila Couto; Alcalde,Claudete Regina; Macedo,Francisco de Assis Fonseca de; Santos,Geraldo Tadeu dos; Valloto,Altair Antônio; Lima,Luciano Soares de; Molina,Bruna Susan de Labio.
Twenty-four Saanen goats (15 multiparous and 9 primiparous) from 21 days prepartum to 200 days in lactation were used to evaluate milk yield and composition. Animals were randomly distributed in a 3 × 2 factorial arrangement (3 diets × 2 parity orders) and fed a 40:60 forage:concentrate diet composed of soybean meal, soybean meal + dry yeast or dry yeast as protein source, plus ground corn, mineral supplement and corn silage. The protein source did not influence the body weight of pre and postpartum goats. Prepartum, postpartum and postpeak dry matter intake (DMI) were not altered by diets. However, goats fed the diet containing dry yeast as protein source had lower DMI in late lactation. Milk yield and feed efficiency were not affected by diets. Milk...

Phenotypic correlation of characteristics in the gilt performance test with an average number of live-born piglets through all achieved births, during the reproductive exploitation Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Radović,I.; Dragin,S.; Katanić,N.; Beuković,D.; Stančić,I.; Mirkov,M.; Horvatovic,M. P..
ABSTRACT Reproductive efficacy of sows dictates the level of profitability of the production itself, and the moment of testing and selection of gilts for breeding (as the parents of a future generation), represents a very important moment. Given the fact that the selection of gilts for breeding is partly based on the weight-gain in the test, in this study we examined the influence of a daily weight-gain of gilts in the test of the manifestation of important reproductive characteristics - the size of the litter of the first and the other parities, as well as the percentage of sows that gave birth in relation to previous breeding process. Data of the 11637 tested gilts that completed the performance test have been used for the test. The studied...

Physiological age and longevity of Anopheles (Kerteszia) cruzii Dyar Knab (Diptera: Culicidae) in the Atlantic Forest of Southern Brazil Neotropical Entomology
Dalla Bona,Ana C; Navarro-Silva,Mário A.
We analyzed the reproductive status, ovarian development, daily survival rate, and length of the gonotrophic cycle in females of Anopheles ( Kerteszia ) cruzii Dyar & Knab, to determine how these factors influence the risk of malaria transmission in the coastal region of the state of Paraná, southern Brazil. In the Palmito State Forest, Paranaguá, females were captured at dawn and dusk by aspiration, bimonthly from December 2006 through March 2007. A total of 2,268 females were captured, of which 454 were dissected. Of these, 48% were parous, 50% not reproductive, 73% in Christopher and Mer stages I and II, 23% in stages III to V, 55% nulliparous, 14% uniparous, and 11% had blood in their midgut. Daily survival was 0.24 ± 0.03 overall, 0.51 ± 0.04...

Reproductive experience influences grooming behavior during pregnancy in rats BJMBR
Serafim,A.P.; Felicio,L.F..
The pregnancy-induced increase in self-licking observed in rats is important for mammary gland development and lactation. Reproductive experience has epidemiologial implications such as a decrease in the incidence of mammary gland cancer in women and it also influences various behavioral, neurochemical and endocrine parameters. The aim of the present study was to investigate the influence of reproductive experience on grooming behavior patterns during pregnancy in rats. Self-grooming behavior was measured in age-matched virgin, primi- and multigravid (days 7, 8, 9, 19, and 20 of pregnancy) rats. General grooming (head, forelimbs and shoulders) was not significantly different among virgin, primi- and multigravid rats during pregnancy. Confirming previous...

Piglets production data of 1,252 Pietrain sows (3,583 records), which farrowed from 2004 through 2007 and raised under Thai environmental condition, were used to study the effect of proportion of female piglets born alive (FPB) on number of piglets born alive (NBA), average birth weight of the piglets per litter (BW), average weaning weight of the piglets per litter (WW), and average daily gain of the piglets per litter (ADG). In this study, FPB was defined as the proportion of female to all piglets in a litter, and they were categorized into 5 groups: group 1 (0 < FPB < 20 %), group 2 (20 < FPB < 40 %), group 3 (40 < FPB < 60 %), group 4 (60 < FPB < 80 %) and group 5 (80 < FPB < 100 %). The statistical model composed of year...
